Medicine for the heart and soul

A few days ago I came across this most divinely beautiful youtube video recording of the Gayatri Mantra performed by Norwegian duo, Radical Devotion.

I have been listening and singing along to it several times each day and it has had such a profound effect on my body, heart and soul that I wanted to share it with you here. I feel more loving, kind, gentle, peaceful, compassionate, strong, centred and committed to helping others find their way.

I invite you to make yourself comfortable, close your eyes, and just listen to this song, which is a prayer to the divine asking for illumination of the mind or enlightenment.

Breathe in and rest here for a short time, soaking in the sweetness of this music, allowing it to touch your heart and move your soul and bring you home. It is medicine for all suffering.

If you can’t see the embedded image, click on the following link to take you to the Youtube video.:

Notice the quality of the silence at the end of the recording, how pristine it is, how still and unified the audience are.

Rest here for a while before you go on with the busyness of your day.

Perhaps you can take the qualities of love, compassion, peace and that stillness into your day so that this prayer may benefit you and all you come into contact with all day long.

What is the Gayatri mantra?

The Gayatri Mantra is a very ancient prayer; some say it is more than 5,000 years old and that is an unbroken chain, always being chanted by someone somewhere in the world.

The words of the mantra are:

Om Bhur Bhuvaḥ Swaḥ
Tat-savitur Vareñyaṃ
Bhargo Devasya Dhīmahi
Dhiyo Yonaḥ Prachodayāt

There are many translations, but the one I am familiar with from Chameli Ardagh and Awakening Women is:

Throughout all existence
“That” essential nature illuminating existence
is the Adorable One.
May all beings perceive with subtle intellect
the magnificent brilliance of enlightened awareness.

Life can be endlessly busy.  There are important things we must do in this world, but for a moment I invite you to rest here in your heart. Many people and beings on this planet are hurting. Send yourself and them love.

From rest and love, a new world may grow.

With love and courage

How to recover from a setback and reconnect to your heart

Here in Australia, the Federal election on the weekend delivered for many of us a very surprising result, as our coalition government was voted back into power.

Along with many earth lovers, I reeled in shock and disbelief. My heart is still weeping.

Many of us believed that this was a climate election and that Australia would vote for what needs to be done to help prevent a climate change catastrophe.

Instead, Australia voted mostly for no change (except for a few key figureheads who did not regain their parliamentary seats.)

Our Federal government tells us that we are on track to meet the Paris agreement on carbon reduction requirements, but the IPCC (Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change), which is a United Nations body, is telling us that this is no longer enough.

I won’t get into the politics here because this post isn’t really about politics.

This post is about how to recover from a setback and it is about me talking directly to your inner flame, your soul, your calling, the gifts and seeds and dreams and qualities within you that need nurturing and encouragement to come out of hiding because the world needs them.

Mother earth needs you. We need you. Please do not give up hope. Please keep nurturing your dreams and gifts no matter how small and insignificant or bigger than you they may seem.

To help, I have two things for you today:

1.    A poem for the world weary

2.    A meditation to connect with you heart and help you recover from a setback

And as a a little bonus, I’ve even recorded them for you to listen to on soundcloud. Here is the poem and here is the meditation.

Miracles are everywhere: a poem for the world-weary

What do you do when you're world-weary?

How do you restore your hallowed heart?

I feel my feet on the earth as I look up at the sky.

I breathe deep into my belly and touch the ticklish gift of life,

then exhale anything icky that may have got stuck.

If I can walk, I will walk.

And if I can't, then I will look out into this great world

beyond my confined view and ask for a miracle.

They are everywhere.

Today, as I walked,

swept along by the icy breeze,

that overpowered the subtle sun,

the grass glowed with luminous aliveness;

boundless blades quivered with glee

and so did I

as the miracle I asked for

silently found and blessed me,

reminding me of my own luminosity,

my own aliveness,

and my own boundlessness

that nobody and nothing

can ever take from me.

A meditation for setback recovery

Whenever we experience a shock of some kind or setback, the first step is always to breathe.

Breathe in and out. Feel your breath fill your belly and your chest. Then let it go.

Again, breathe in. Feel your breath fill your belly, your belly expands and then your breath fills your chest. Then let it go.

And again, breathe in fully, expanding your stomach and filing your chest. Then let it go.

Feel your feet on the ground and the earth solidly supporting you here and now.  Breathe in and out and feel the support that is here.

And as you begin to feel more steady and grounded in this moment, look around you.

Notice what you see without judgment. Maybe you are in your bedroom with your bed made nicely or maybe there’s a mountain of clothes. Maybe you are on the train on your way to work with a train full of commuters all quiet and looking at their smart phones. Maybe you are sitting in a park in the sunshine.

Wherever you are, just notice.

Then close your eyes and take your awareness inside yourself to your heart.

Feel into your heart space. Sense your heart your heart beating to it’s own beat. Feel it’s vastness.

Ask your heart what it needs you to know right now?

Ask your heart if there is anything you need to do right now? What, if anything, is your next step?

Just wait and listen for your heart’s response without expectation.

It may be enough that you are here in this moment feeling connected to your heart. Maybe there are emotions that need to be felt and expressed. If you are in a place that feels safe and comfortable, may you can feel into them. Notice sensations, temperature, colour. Give them names if that helps. Sadness. Grief. Despair. Hopelessness. Fear. Confusion.

Maybe your heart has words of wisdom for you. Sacred reminders from within about what you most need to know right now. Listen. If you can, write them down.

Stay here as long as you need, feeling, talking to and listening to your own heart.

When you feel complete, thank your heart. Know that your heart is always available to you. You just have to breathe and bring your awareness back in.

Listen to the meditation on soundcloud here.

I hope this poem and meditation serves you.

Go wander

[I am currently in Italy with my husband and his family for the Christmas holidays. This is a re-share and small update of a poem that I wrote a few years ago.
To create change in your life, you have to do things differently.
Open up space for nothingness so new inspiration can come through.
Step off your current path so you can experience something new.
Be willing to become lost. You will see new things. See the world differently. Strengthen your intuition and connection to your soul.
Be willing to let go of the life that you currently have. Be willing to wander and experiment.]

Let go of your schedule, your timetables, your calendar, your planning, your busyness and your need to make your waking moments productive.

Go outside, exactly as you are. Go to a park or a forest, a beach, your backyard or any space you have longed to explore.

Let your feet follow your eyes re-opened as if born anew and seeing for the first time.

Go to what calls your attention, to what flirts with your senses with its bright pretty colours or intriguing patterns and shapes.

Let your mind rest and your life force move you.

Wander without aim, without rules or constraints.

Wander with curiosity.

Wander with faith in its aimlessness.

Wandering produces nothing yet yields everything.

Wandering reclaims the instinct of your soul cut off the moment your life became ruled by your calendar and time, your to do lists and busyness, and the idea that you have to make something of your life for your life to matter instead of living fluidly as an expression of joy.

With love and courage,

Kym

The unseen affect of your inspired action

We never truly know how what we do or say affects another person. We’re not in their bodies to know how it feels for them, and often we don’t get feedback from them as the wave of life takes us in different directions. If we did, I think it would inspire us to be more kind and to take more inspired action. But in the absence of feedback, we must surrender and either trust our action or imagine the affect it has, that our intention to offer kindness, love, encouragement does just that.

I want to offer two stories about the unseen affect of taking inspired action: one as the receiver and one as the giver.

Receiving

Recently I was surprised to receive the most beautiful email from one of my blog readers, who I will refer to as G. She took the time to share some of her personal journey with me and told me how perfectly timed some of my articles have been for her and how they have touched her in different ways. Her words landed inside me deeply. I cried as I read the email.

Sometimes, I doubt what I’m doing. It was around a year ago that I first had the inspiration to change the name of my blog to Sacred Reminders for Courageous Hearts. My inner critic reared up her nasty head asking me who was I to think I could write sacred reminders? I doubted if I should do it. It took me months to actually do it.

Sometimes I write posts and I get feedback. Sometimes I don’t. But the absence of feedback doesn’t mean that my offering or your offering for that matter hasn’t made a difference. No feedback is just no feedback.

Borrowing the words of George Michael, sometimes “you gotta have faith.” Keep following your inspiration and trust it. The affect of it may just be unseen.

I am so grateful that G felt inspired to write to me and acted on it. It was a simple, free but great gift that has deeply touched my heart and inspired renewed energy and commitment to my writing and following my inspiration.

Your kindness, encouragement and belief in another person may be just the medicine you didn’t know they needed.

Giving

A few years ago when I was in London, holed up at my friend’s place and unable to undertake my planned pilgrimage from Rome to Jerusalem due to my seized lower back and hip problems, I experienced a most beautiful and intimate moment of inspired action.

I was walking back to the underground station after receiving a massage to help my body heal, when I walked past a small, old woman with white hair pulled back in a bun sitting in a doorway with her bag of belongings next to her. The street was busy and many people walked past her without even looking at her. I saw her and walked past too but I experienced a strong inner directive to go back and speak to her.

Her name was Mary. I squatted beside her and spoke to her. She told me her story about how she had become homeless, a story of family relationship breakdown and misfortune. I listened and asked questions.

Then I felt another inner directive to offer her a hug. This is not something I usually do. At first I felt resistant, then awkward and shy but the inner directive was strong. So I asked her.

“Mary, would you like a hug?”
Her face lit up and her blue eyes beamed.
“Yes please,” she responded.

I wrapped my arms around her and she wrapped her arms around me and we hugged for a long time. When our time together felt complete, I gifted her some money to get a room for the night, and held her hand for a few moments.

“I wish I had a daughter like you,” she told me.

I looked lovingly into her eyes and then left.

I don’t know what lasting affect if any that moment had on Mary’s life. I like to hope that she felt love and kindness, and that the memory of that moment might help her keep going through tough moments.

What I do know is that it has had a lasting affect on me. Even now, three years later, I think of Mary and wonder where she is, how she is, if she is still alive. I feel a great love and tenderness in my heart. It makes me want to be more kind, more generous, more giving.

Taking inspired action, creating and offering anything that is inspired including love and kindness has an extremely positive affect on your own heart and energy field.  Maybe no one will ever see your artwork, read your poem or book, or receive or acknowledge your heartfelt offering. But following your inspiration and offering it regardless of how or if it will be received by anyone else feels really good.

Inspired action increases your energy and creativity and makes you feel more positive, radiant, and joyful. And so by default without even knowing, you will affect anyone you come into contact with.

Resist, avoid or hold back on your inspired action and you will most likely feel miserable and others will feel your misery. But by flowing with your inspiration and doing what you love, your inner fire will glow brightly and others will experience and even absorb some of your radiance.

You might just light them up. You might just change their moment, their day, even their whole life.

Your inspired action matters.

You matter.

With love and courage to you all and deep gratitude to G and to Mary,

Kym

Tell me your dream, my love

Tell me your dream, my love.

What magic do you want to bring into this world?

What ingenuity do you want to make real?

What pain do you want to help heal?

What work place do you want to transform with kindness and compassion so that it truly serves a heart-centred vision first, and profits second?

What love story do you want to live whether it’s happily ever after or whether it cracks your heart open more widely than you ever imagined it could open?

How do you want to live so that everyday your heart sings in joyful aliveness?

How do you want to be the change that this world is longing for?

What adventure do you want to take? What path do you want to walk? What mountain do you want climb? What oceans do you want to sail? What far land sings it’s summoning song to you?

What creativity is longing to be expressed through you? Is it a book, a painting, a photograph, a song? What offering of your heart do you want to gift this world to bring ease, to heal or inspire the heart of another?

Just for this moment, don’t speak of your fears or the barriers to bringing your dreams to life.
Instead, tell me how your cells quiver in excitement when you speak of your dreams.
Tell me how your longing begins to burn stronger when you give yourself permission to speak freely and unrestrained about what you truly want.
Tell me how your Soul feels when it knows it has been heard.

Come closer to your dreaming, one breath at a time, one word at a time, whisper it if you must.
Speak of it as if it is alive here now, not some day far away.
Feel all the possibility and magic that is here right now.

Let me see how your longing lights you up from the inside out.
You are magnificent. You are a living field of possibility.
Your light is the fuel you will need.
Your light is the medicine that will set other souls aflame.

Tell me your dream, my love.
Let the words pour through you uncensored.
Allow your dreaming to be expressed. Don’t hide it or push it away. Let it be alive in you now.
This is an intimate embrace of your own heart.
This is how you start to embody your dream into life.

With love and courage,

Kym xx
